Because the uroboros, contains both masculine as well as feminine traits we must discuss the slaying of the other half of the World Parents; the father. The configuration of the father archetype is, like the mother archetype, a duality.
In the projections of mythology there occurs concurrently, a positive father along side a negative father. However, in connection with the ego, the mother image always remains attached to the world of instinct (unconsciousness). The mother archetype harbors a sense of eternalness; life and nature which contrasts with the father archetype who is fundamentally relative. The father is a changeling adjusting to and representing the fluctuating nature of culture. It is the historical world and the fluid environment of the collective values of right and wrong.
The task of the hero in relationship to the father is to "awaken the sleeping images of the future which can and must come forth from the night , in order to give the world a new and better face." (11)
The hero's destiny is to bring forth the new society from the destruction of the old.
"In this conflict the "inner voice," the command of the transpersonal father or father archetype who wants the world to change, collides with the personal father who speaks for the law." (12)
In this regard, the hero is an antagonist of the old society's leadership and comes into opposition with their archetypal image, the Terrible Father. He stands in the way of the hero's ego development and champions the old order of consciousness.
The Terrible Father identifies with the spiritual aspects of the old order. The spiritual organization and culture, in the guise of the Terrible Father, attacks the hero with the tenets of the old morality, traditions and culture.
The hero's (ego) dragon fight with the transpersonal forces of the mother and father highlights, not only the societal evolution of consciousness but the experience of all individuals in the formation of their own personalities.
